On 5 September, the architecture exhibition “Buone Nuove | Good News: Women in Architecture – from MAXXI to MET’ opened in Toronto, at the Paul H. Cocker Gallery of the Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU).

Curated by Pippo Ciorra, Elena Motisi, and Elena Tinacci of the MAXXI Museum, this travelling exhibition, acquired by MAECI in 2023, presents the works and words of dozens of Italian and international women architects, who have left their mark on contemporary architecture and are giving birth to a new generation of “city creators”.

The exhibition provides not only a historical overview of the first women who, since the second half of the 20th century, have achieved goals and made projects of global scope (such as Lina Bo Bardi, Gae Aulenti, Jane Jacobs, Phyllis Lambert and Zaha Hadid), but also of the new generations of female professionals and collectives led by women, who are contributing to the quality of contemporary architecture, urban planning and design.

The Toronto stop is particularly significant because it is enriched by an important Canadian section curated by Lisa Landrum, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at TMU. This section presents the work of 15 female architects and designers from Toronto and Ontario, underlining the exponential growth in the presence and relevance of female professionals in the sector.

After Toronto, the exhibition will travel to Montreal, where it will be on display at the University of Quebec UQAM – Centre des Arts et Design.

“Good News | Buone Nuove” is presented by the MAXXI Foundation, the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto, the Italian Cultural Institute and Toronto Metropolitan University, in partnership with Toronto-based Diamond Schmitt Architects.
