With the inscription of the site “Funerary Traditions in Prehistoric Sardinia: the Domus de Janas,” the number of UNESCO-certified World Heritage Sites in Italy rises to 61. The long-awaited decision came today following the UNESCO World Heritage Committee’s 47th session in Paris.
The site enhances the cultural specificities of Sardinian prehistory. For the Domus de Janas (House of Fairies), the historical and archaeological value is coupled with symbolic importance, having always been part of the collective imagination of the island’s populations.
The inscription of the site confirms Italy’s primacy on the UNESCO List. This achievement demonstrates, above all, the uniqueness of Italy’s cultural and natural heritage.
