On 2 June, at Villa Hesperia, the Residence of the Italian Ambassador to Algeria, Alessandra Schiavo, celebrations were held for the 80th anniversary of the Republic. The event brought together approximately 1,400 guests, including representatives of Algerian institutions, members of the diplomatic corps, the Italian community and figures from the economic and cultural spheres of both countries.
The evening was enriched by a concert performed by the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino, organised by the Italian Cultural Institute in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy in Algiers, in the evocative setting of the Jardin d’Essai du Hamma.
Founded in Salento in 1975, the Canzoniere Grecanico Salentino is regarded as one of the most authoritative and innovative ensembles in Italian folk music. As a guardian of the pizzica and taranta traditions, the group has succeeded in renewing the musical heritage of Southern Italy through contemporary sounds, weaving together tambourines, violins, accordions and powerful vocals into an engaging and dynamic performance.
The performance marked a moment of dialogue between the Algerian audience and Italian culture, conveyed through the shared Mediterranean musical traditions that characterise the artistic production of both countries.
The concert was further enhanced by the setting of the Jardin d’Essai botanical garden, one of the most striking landmarks in the Algerian capital, renowned for its monumental palm trees and the elegance of its avenues.
