Ministro Tajani, es un privilegio volver a conversar con usted.
Las relaciones entre Italia y México cumplieron 150 años el año pasado. Los 2 países tuvieron ocasión de hacer un balance de lo mucho que se ha hecho y de lo mucho que aún se puede hacer; Italia y México comparten historia, valores y sensibilidades. ¿Cómo calificaría usted el estado de las relaciones bilaterales? Y ¿Cuál es el objetivo fundamental de su visita?
Italia y México están vinculados por una antigua, profunda y sincera amistad, arraigada en nuestras comunes raíces latinas, en un rico intercambio cultural y en la firme voluntad de afrontar juntos los grandes desafíos de nuestro tiempo. Esta relación especial ha florecido en numerosos ámbitos, también gracias a un diálogo constante que en los últimos años ha cobrado nuevo impulso tras el compromiso de nuestro Gobierno para valorizar las relaciones con toda America Latina. Diez años después de la última visita de un Canciller italiano a su País, con mi viaje quiero confirmar la seriedad de nuestro compromiso hacia México como socio estratégico en la región.
Será una oportunidad para consolidar los logros alcanzados hasta ahora y para trazar nuevas vías de colaboración, en una fase histórica de incertidumbres, donde hay que fortalecer los vínculos con quien comparte nuestros objetivos y nuestros valores. Es muy importante para Italia estrechar las relaciones con el gobierno de su nuevo Presidente Schinbaum. Por esta razón, además de reunirme con mi homólogo, el Canciller Juan Ramón de la Fuente, hoy inauguraré el Foro de Negocios e Inversión México-Italia junto al Secretario de Economía Marcelo Ebrard y tendré reuniones con la Secretaría de Gobernación Rosa Icela Rodríguez y con el Secretario de Seguridad Omar Hamid García Harfuch. No faltarán tampoco un encuentro con la Secretaria de Turismo Joselina Rodríguez, para discutir nuevas sinergias en un sector de importancia estratégica muy elevada para Italia y México.
Hoy tendrá lugar en la Ciudad de México un importante Foro de negocios en el que participarán muchas firmas y empresarios italianos. ¿Cuál es la importancia de este foro? Y ¿Cuáles serían, desde su perspectiva, las áreas de oportunidad para ampliar la cartera de inversiones y también el comercio bilateral?
México no es sólo un país amigo con el que compartimos profundos lazos históricos y culturales, sino también un socio comercial estratégico de primer nivel. Hoy es el primer país de destino de las exportaciones italianas en América Latina, y el segundo en el continente americano. Esta sólida relación se refleja en los resultados concretos: en 2024 el comercio entre Italia y México alcanzó los 8,12 millones de euros (un aumento del +10,1% con respecto al 2023), confirmando el enorme potencial de nuestra colaboración. Por eso, México ha sido incluido entre los países prioritarios en el Plan de Acción para la Exportación Italiana, una estrategia que lancé en Roma el pasado 21 de marzo, enfocada en fortalecer nuestra presencia en los mercados con mayor proyección fuera de la Unión Europea. Con esta visión, he promovido la organización del Foro Empresarial Italia-México. Este evento reúne a algunas de las mejores empresas italianas en sectores clave como energía, infraestructura, agroindustria, turismo, siderurgia, automotriz, aeroespacial, farmacéutico y biotecnológico. Será una oportunidad única para impulsar nuevas alianzas, intercambiar conocimientos e identificar oportunidades concretas de inversión y cooperación. Italia apuesta por México con convicción, y lo hace con una mirada a largo plazo, basada en la innovación, la sostenibilidad y el crecimiento compartido.
Hay unas doscientas empresas italianas invirtiendo en México en un arco muy amplio de actividades, desde la manufactura hasta las energías renovables. ¿Cuál es la valoración de su gobierno sobre el tratamiento que tienen las empresas y los proyectos e inversiones italianas en México?
México es hoy un polo de atracción para las inversiones italianas, y la presencia de nuestras empresas en su territorio lo confirma. Cientos de compañías italianas operan activamente en el país, generando valor y empleo en sectores clave como la manufactura, la industria automotriz y la moda, donde el diseño y la innovación son nuestro sello distintivo.
Italia no solo está presente: está comprometida. Con toda su capacidad industrial, con su talento y su visión de futuro, Italia quiere ser un socio de referencia para el crecimiento de México. Opciones como la decisión de Aeroméxico de abrir vuelos comerciales a Italia también son de gran ayuda, y espero que las frecuencias de los vuelos puedan verificarse a lo largo del año.
En el plano económico presenciamos una reconfiguración del orden mundial por efecto de las nuevas prioridades políticas de los Estados Unidos. La administración Trump ha provocado una recalibración de las prioridades de las alianzas en América del Norte y en Europa. ¿De qué manera dos socios tan importantes de los Estados Unidos (como lo son Italia y México) pueden trabajar juntos, coordinar acciones o intercambiar experiencias para enfrentar esta nueva realidad?
Italia y México, como socios y miembros destacados de la comunidad internacional, desempeñan un papel fundamental en la gobernanza de los cambios que se están produciendo a nivel global. Los desafíos actuales – desde la seguridad y el cambio climático hasta las tensiones económicas y geopolíticas – exigen una respuesta colectiva. Por eso, es crucial reforzar nuestra colaboración política para defender los espacios multilaterales que han sido pilares de paz y estabilidad durante décadas, empezando por las Naciones Unidas.
La nueva postura de los Estados Unidos debería aprovecharse como una oportunidad. Junto a México, creemos que es el momento de impulsar una reforma de las instituciones multilaterales que las haga más ágiles, efectivas y centradas en las verdaderas prioridades globales. Asimismo, debemos insistir en el diálogo, también en el ámbito económico y comercial, como herramienta esencial para frenar la escalada de medidas proteccionistas y arancelarias que perjudican al crecimiento y a las cadenas globales de valor.
Ministro, usted México lo conoce bien, en las distintas funciones que ha desempeñado (Comisario europeo y presidente del parlamento europeo) ha sido un actor eficiente para construir vínculos transatlánticos. En estos días se ha anunciado el cierre de las negociaciones comerciales para la actualización del acuerdo marco con la Unión Europea. ¿Cuál es la perspectiva que tiene sobre ese proceso?
La conclusión de las negociaciones para la modernización del Acuerdo Global entre la Unión Europea y México es un resultado muy importante y largamente esperado. Italia ha apoyado su necesidad en Bruselas y espera que pueda firmarse pronto. Una vez que entre en vigor, el acuerdo generará beneficios significativos para ambas partes.
Ministro, permítame llevar la conversación al ámbito político.
¿Cómo valora el diálogo con el gobierno mexicano en el plano bilateral y cuáles son los temas de interés entre los dos gobiernos?
Italia y México comparten una rica variedad de intereses comunes, desde la cooperación política y económica, hasta los ámbitos cultural, académico, científico y tecnológico. Con el nuevo Gobierno mexicano, Italia está más que dispuesta a fortalecer y relanzar el Partenariado Estratégico bilateral, un marco que desde el 2012 ha sido clave para profundizar los lazos entre nuestros países en todas las áreas de interés mutuo.
En los últimos años, Italia y México han unido esfuerzos para abordar desafíos globales, como el crimen organizado transnacional y la corrupción, abriendo nuevas puertas para la cooperación en diplomacia jurídica, cooperación judicial y policial.
El diálogo entre nuestros países no solo se limita a temas bilaterales. También aborda cuestiones de impacto global y regional, como la guerra en Ucrania, la crisis en Palestina, el cambio climático, la transición energética, la salud global y la transformación digital. Este enfoque integral nos permite trabajar juntos para construir un futuro más seguro, sostenible y próspero para nuestras naciones y para el mundo.
Considerando que Italia y México tradicionalmente comparten visiones convergentes en foros como la ONU y el G20 ¿el plano multilateral es relevante en esa conversación?
El ámbito multilateral es clave en la relación entre Italia y México, dos países que comparten una visión común de un orden internacional basado en el respeto a las normas, la cooperación y la responsabilidad compartida. Esta convergencia de principios se refleja de manera clara en foros fundamentales como las Naciones Unidas, donde trabajamos codo a codo para fortalecer un sistema multilateral más justo y eficaz.
Un ejemplo claro de esta colaboración es el proceso de reforma del Consejo de Seguridad, en el que ambos países forman parte activa del grupo “Uniting for Consensus”. Este grupo impulsa una reforma inclusiva, apoyada en un consenso amplio y en la igualdad soberana de los Estados, con el objetivo de mejorar la legitimidad y la efectividad del sistema multilateral.
El G20 es otro foro clave donde Italia y México unen esfuerzos, buscando soluciones conjuntas a los grandes desafíos globales, como el cambio climático, la justicia económica y la paz internacional.
Históricamente ha habido cooperación en temas en los que Italia ha tenido un desarrollo institucional que se ha convertido en un referente, en el combate al crimen organizado o la tutela y custodia de los bienes culturales por citar dos casos relevantes. ¿En qué campos están cooperando o pueden cooperar los dos países para mejorar sus capacidades e intercambiar experiencias?
Italia y México mantienen una fructífera cooperación en los ámbitos de la seguridad y la justicia. Compartimos modelos y experiencias útiles en la clasificación y tratamiento de los presos más peligrosos y en la reinserción social. En este ámbito nos beneficiamos de la lección de magistrados heroicos como Paolo Borsellino y Giovanni Falcone, cuyo aniversario 33 de la matanza cae mañana. Además, Italia y México llevan muchos años colaborando en la protección y conservación del patrimonio cultural. Italia – a través del Arma de los Carabineros – está desempeñando un papel crucial en la recuperación y restitución de más de mil piezas arqueológicas mexicanas que han sido robadas y comercializadas en mercados ilegales.
En el plano cultural Italia es una potencia y tiene un abanico muy amplio en materia de “soft power”. Las marcas italianas, el diseño, la moda y también las industrias culturales tienen una enorme penetración. Además, Italia será el país de honor de la FIL de Guadalajara ¿qué impacto tiene la cultura en mejorar o profundizar las relaciones entre los dos países?
Italia es sinónimo de cultura, creatividad e innovación. Reconocida globalmente por su patrimonio artístico, literario y creativo, el país ha convertido su legado cultural en una herramienta estratégica para proyectarse en el mundo. “Made in Italy” es mucho más que una etiqueta: es un emblema de excelencia, calidad y originalidad que goza de admiración universal, especialmente en México.
Ser país de honor en la FIL de Guadalajara 2026 no solo refleja el profundo amor por la cultura y la literatura italianas, sino también el reconocimiento a la excelencia del saber hacer italiano, admirado en todo el mundo. En Guadalajara, Italia presentará un programa cultural excepcional que brindará una visión completa de nuestra creatividad en todas sus formas. El mundo del libro y la publicación será solo una de las facetas destacadas, acompañada por conciertos, exposiciones, proyecciones de cine, teatro, y eventos relacionados con el diseño y la gastronomía, que abrirán un abanico de experiencias únicas para el público mexicano.
Además, como parte de nuestra agenda cultural, he lanzado una nueva y emocionante iniciativa: la Conferencia de la Italofonía, que se celebrará el próximo otoño. México está invitado a participar, sumándose a un espacio que promoverá aún más el intercambio cultural y la colaboración entre países italofonos.
Finalmente, Ministro, con la experiencia que usted tiene ¿Considera usted que a pesar de las turbulencias que hoy experimenta el sistema internacional, los valores democráticos de occidente son la mejor garantía para construir una convivencia armónica entre naciones y un orden internacional justo?
Aunque nuestros sistemas democráticos no son perfectos, son la herramienta más poderosa que tenemos para lograr una convivencia armónica entre las naciones. Los valores democráticos nos permiten construir puentes, creando una cooperación que no solo es eficaz, sino también inclusiva y respetuosa de los derechos de todos.
Estos principios siguen siendo el cimiento sobre el cual podemos promover la paz. Son también los principios que unen a Italia y México, dos pueblos hermanos, que comparten la misma visión del mundo. La libertad se fundamenta en el respeto mutuo, donde cada individuo es libre de expresarse y vivir sin perjudicar a los demás, creando así un entorno de convivencia pacífica y equitativa entre las naciones.

Interview with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Antonio Tajani, on the occasion of his visit to Mexico
Minister Tajani, it is a privilege to speak with you again.
Last year marked the 150th anniversary of relations between Italy and Mexico. The two countries had the opportunity to take stock of what has been achieved and what still remains to be done; Italy and Mexico share history, values, and sensibilities. How would you describe the current state of bilateral relations? And what is the primary objective of your visit?
Italy and Mexico are bound by an ancient, deep, and sincere friendship, rooted in our shared Latin heritage, a rich cultural exchange, and a firm commitment to jointly address the major challenges of our time. This special relationship has flourished in numerous areas, also thanks to continuous dialogue that in recent years has gained new momentum following our Government’s commitment to strengthening relations across Latin America. Ten years after the last visit of an Italian Foreign Minister to your country, my visit aims to reaffirm the seriousness of our commitment to Mexico as a strategic partner in the region.
It will be an opportunity to consolidate the achievements made so far and to chart new paths for cooperation, at a historic moment of uncertainty, when we need to strengthen ties with those who share our goals and values. It is very important for Italy to strengthen relations with the government of your new President, Mrs. Scheinbaum. For this reason, in addition to meeting with my counterpart, Secretary of Foreign Affairs Juan Ramón de la Fuente, today I will inaugurate the Italy-Mexico Business and Investment Forum together with Secretary of Economy Marcelo Ebrard, and will hold meetings with Secretary of the Interior Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and Secretary of Security and Civilian Protection Omar Hamid García Harfuch. There will also be a meeting with Secretary of Tourism Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, to discuss new synergies in a sector of great strategic importance for Italy and Mexico.
Today, an important business forum will take place in Mexico City, with the participation of many Italian companies and entrepreneurs. What is the importance of this forum? And, in your opinion, what are the areas of opportunity for expanding the investment portfolio and bilateral trade?
Mexico is not only a friendly country with which we share deep historical and cultural ties, but also a strategic trading partner of the highest order. Today, it is the leading destination for Italian exports in Latin America and the second largest in the Americas. This solid relationship is reflected in concrete results: in 2024, trade between Italy and Mexico reached 8.12 billion euros (an increase of +10.1% compared to 2023), confirming the enormous potential of our collaboration. For this reason, Mexico has been included among the priority countries in the Italian Export Action Plan, a strategy I launched in Rome on 21 March, focused on strengthening our presence in the markets with the greatest potential outside the European Union. With this vision in mind, I have promoted the organisation of the Italy-Mexico Business Forum. This event brings together some of the best Italian companies in key sectors such as energy, infrastructure, agribusiness, tourism, steel, automotive, aerospace, pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. It will be a unique opportunity to foster new partnerships, exchange knowledge and identify concrete opportunities for investment and cooperation. Italy is firmly committed to Mexico, with a long-term vision based on innovation, sustainability and shared growth.
There are around two hundred Italian companies investing in Mexico in a wide range of activities, from manufacturing to renewable energy. How does your government assess the treatment of Italian companies, projects and investments in Mexico?
Mexico is now a magnet for Italian investment, and the presence of our companies in your country confirms it. Hundreds of Italian companies are actively operating in Mexico, generating value and employment in key sectors such as manufacturing, the automotive industry and fashion, where design and innovation are our hallmarks.
Italy is not only there: it is committed. With all its industrial capacity, talent and vision for the future, Italy wants to be a key partner for Mexico’s growth. Options such as Aeroméxico’s decision to open commercial flights to Italy are also very helpful, and I hope that the frequency of flights can be verified throughout the year.
On the economic front, we are witnessing a reconfiguration of the world order as a result of the new political priorities of the United States. The Trump administration has triggered a recalibration of alliance priorities in North America and Europe. How can two such important partners of the United States (such as Italy and Mexico) work together, coordinate actions or exchange experiences to face this new reality?
Italy and Mexico, as partners and prominent members of the international community, play a fundamental role in governing the changes taking place at the global level. The current challenges – from security and climate change to economic and geopolitical tensions – require a collective response. It is therefore crucial to strengthen our political collaboration to defend the multilateral spaces that have been pillars of peace and stability for decades, starting with the United Nations.
The new stance of the United States should be seized as an opportunity. Together with Mexico, we believe that now is the time to push for a reform of multilateral institutions to make them more agile, effective and focused on the real global priorities. We must also insist on dialogue, including in the economic and trade spheres, as an essential tool for curbing the escalation of protectionist and tariff measures that harm growth and global value chains.
Minister, you know Mexico well, and in the various roles you have held (European Commissioner and President of the European Parliament) you have been an effective player in building transatlantic ties. The conclusion of trade negotiations to update the framework agreement with the European Union has been announced in recent days. What is your view on this process?
The conclusion of the negotiations for the modernisation of the Global Agreement between the European Union and Mexico is a very important and long-awaited result. Italy has supported this necessity in Brussels and hopes that it can be signed soon. Once it enters into force, the agreement will generate significant benefits for both parties.
Minister, allow me to turn the conversation to the political arena.
How do you assess the dialogue with the Mexican Government at the bilateral level and what are the issues of interest between the two governments?
Italy and Mexico share a rich variety of common interests, ranging from political and economic cooperation to the cultural, academic, scientific and technological fields. Italy is more than willing to strengthen and relaunch the bilateral Strategic Partnership – a framework that since 2012 has been key to deepening ties between our countries in all areas of mutual interest – with the new Mexican Government.
In recent years, Italy and Mexico have joined forces to tackle global challenges such as transnational organised crime and corruption, opening new doors for cooperation in legal diplomacy, judicial and police cooperation.
The dialogue between our countries is not limited to bilateral issues. It also addresses issues of global and regional impact, such as the war in Ukraine, the crisis in Palestine, climate change, energy transition, global health and digital transformation. This comprehensive approach allows us to work together to build a more secure, sustainable and prosperous future for our nations and for the world.
Considering that Italy and Mexico traditionally share convergent views in forums such as the UN and the G20, is the multilateral level relevant in this conversation?
The multilateral arena is key to the relationship between Italy and Mexico, two countries that share a common vision of an international order based on respect for rules, cooperation and shared responsibility. This convergence of principles is clearly reflected in key forums such as the United Nations, where we work side by side to strengthen a more just and effective multilateral system.
A clear example of this collaboration is the Security Council reform process, in which both countries are active members of Uniting for Consensus. This group promotes inclusive reform, based on broad consensus and the sovereign equality of States, with the aim of improving the legitimacy and effectiveness of the multilateral system.
The G20 is another key forum where Italy and Mexico join forces in search of joint solutions to major global challenges such as climate change, economic justice and international peace.
Historically speaking, there has been cooperation on issues where Italy has developed institutional frameworks that have become benchmarks, such as the fight against organised crime and the protection and custody of cultural heritage, to name two important cases. In what areas are the two countries cooperating or could they cooperate to improve their capabilities and exchange experiences?
Italy and Mexico enjoy fruitful cooperation in the areas of security and justice. We share useful models and experiences in the classification and treatment of the most dangerous prisoners and in social reintegration. In this field, we benefit from the lessons of heroic magistrates such as Paolo Borsellino and Giovanni Falcone, whose 33rd anniversary of their assassination falls tomorrow. In addition, Italy and Mexico have been collaborating for many years in the protection and preservation of cultural heritage. Italy, through the Carabinieri, is playing a crucial role in the recovery and restitution of more than a thousand Mexican archaeological artefacts that have been stolen and sold on illegal markets.
On a cultural level, Italy is a powerhouse and has a very wide range of soft power. Italian brands, design, fashion and cultural industries have enormous influence. Furthermore, Italy will be the guest of honour at the Guadalajara International Book Fair. What impact does culture have on improving or deepening relations between the two countries?
Italy is synonymous with culture, creativity and innovation. Globally recognised for its artistic, literary and creative heritage, Italy has turned its cultural legacy into a strategic tool for projecting itself onto the world stage. Made in Italy is much more than a label: it is a symbol of excellence, quality and originality that is universally admired, especially in Mexico.
Being the guest of honour at the 2026 Guadalajara International Book Fair not only reflects a deep love for Italian culture and literature, but it also recognises the excellence of Italian know-how, which is admired throughout the world. In Guadalajara, Italy will present an exceptional cultural programme that will offer a comprehensive overview of our creativity in all its forms. The world of books and publishing will be just one of the highlights, accompanied by concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, theatre, and events related to design and gastronomy, which will open up a range of unique experiences for Mexicans.
In addition, as part of our cultural agenda, I have launched a new and exciting initiative: the Italofonia conference, that will be held next autumn. Mexico is invited to participate, joining a space that will further promote cultural exchange and collaboration between italophone countries.
Finally, Minister, with your experience, do you believe that despite the turbulence currently affecting the international system, Western democratic values are the best guarantee for building harmonious coexistence between nations and a fair international order?
Although our democratic systems are not perfect, they are the most powerful tool we have to achieve harmonious coexistence among nations. Democratic values allow us to build bridges, creating cooperation that is not only effective but also inclusive and respectful of the rights of everyone.
These principles remain the foundation on which we can promote peace. They are also the principles that unite Italy and Mexico, two brotherly peoples who share the same worldview. Freedom is based on mutual respect, where each individual is free to express themselves and live without harming others, thus creating an environment of peaceful and equitable coexistence among nations
