PRESS ACCREDITATION NOTICE – Press conference to present the “Mediterranean Conference” (Prefecture of Palermo, 13 May 2017)

On Saturday, 13 May, at 5 p.m., at the Prefecture of Palermo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Angelino Alfano, will hold a press conference to present the “Mediterranean Conference”, which will be hosted in Palermo on 24 and 25 October 2017.

The October Conference, which will be chaired by the minister, marks the highlight of the Italian Chairmanship of the Mediterranean Contact Group of the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The work of this Group was relaunched following the “Declaration on Cooperation with the Mediterranean Partners”, which was approved at an OSCE meeting in Basel in December 2014 to reinforce the dialogue between this Organisation and the six Partner Countries on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Israel and Jordan).

“The Palermo Conference, which ushers in the Italian Chairmanship of the OSCE in 2018, confirms the pivotal role played by Italy between Europe and the Countries on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean,” said Minister Alfano.

He added: “The leitmotif will be the migration phenomenon in the Mediterranean Basin and the various challenges that this poses to the Vienna-based Organisation and to the Countries on the Southern shore of the Mediterranean.”
