Moscow, “1918-2018: a Century of History at Villa Berg”

Exactly one century ago, on 6 July 1918, the Plenipotentiary of the German Legation, Count von Mirbach-Harff was assassinated at Villa Berg, the current seat of the Italian Embassy in Moscow. To commemorate this tragic event, an international conference was opened at the attendance of eminent Italian, Russian and German historians. The Conference, organised by the Italian Embassy in Moscow in partnership with the German Embassy to the Russian Federation, the Institute of Europe of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IERAS) and the Moscow State Institute International Relations (MGIMO), will continue the afternoon session at the IERAS and close at the Oktyabr Cinema Theatre with an evening screening of the film “The Sixth of July” by Yuri Karasik.

The Conference agenda schedules different sections in which historians will deliver their presentations on a range of subjects: from the figure of the German Ambassador Mirbach-Harff, to Russian-German and Italian-German relations and to future cooperation prospects. The speakers include former Italian Ambassador in Moscow, Sergio Romano, Professor Tatjana Zonova from the Moscow State Institute and Professor Winfried Baumgart from the University of Bonn.

The Italian Ambassador, Pasquale Terracciano, together with the German Ambassador, Rüdiger von Fritsch, unveiled a commemorative plate in honour of Count von Mirbach-Harff in the gardens of Villa Berg.
