On 6th April 1520, Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, one of the great protagonists of the Italian Renaissance, died in Rome. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of his death, the network of Italian Cultural Institutes in the United States and Canada celebrates his genius with a series of online multimedia initiatives.
The first appointment is on May 15th, with a webinar on Zoom by Professor Marzia Faietti, an illustrious Italian art historian, who will present one of the artist’s most intriguing drawings, known as Raphael’s Dream. The mysterious composition portrays a fascinating female figure sitting on a parapet, two angels and some architectural fragments. The drawing dates back to 1514, when Raphael was commissioned to build St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, a fact that may provide a clue to its meaning. Professor Faietti will unravel the mystery behind this drawing and explain how this unique work of art increases our appreciation for Raphael’s extraordinary artistic achievements.
Marzia Faietti, Adjunct Professor at the Department of Arts of the University of Bologna, was Director of Art History at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence from 2004 to 2018, where she coordinated the Cabinet of Drawings and Prints, and is co-curator of the great exhibition Raffaello 1520.1483 at the Scuderie del Quirinale (Quirinal Stables) in Rome, and has curated numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
The event will be moderated by Professor Emanuele Lugli of Stanford University.
