To mark the centenary of the death of the great Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, the Italian Cultural Institute in São Paulo has organised a recital in which young artists will interpret the pieces he made famous. Organised in collaboration with the Scuola dell’Opera of the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the Cia Ópera São Paulo, the event will take place on 19 November (at 7.30 pm) in the garden of the Italian Cultural Institute. The artistic direction is by Paulo Abrão Esper.
The Italian tenor Enrico Caruso (Naples, 25 February 1873 – Sorrento, 2 August 1921) is considered by many, including the illustrious Luciano Pavarotti, to have been one of the greatest classical music performers of all time. With his vast repertoire, Caruso was the first classical singer to attract a large audience around the world, and he still ranks as one of the greatest classical performers in history. His interpretation of “Vesti la giubba”, from the opera “Pagliacci”, was the first in history to sell a million copies.
The pieces will be interpreted by the Italian soprano Chiara Notarnicola, the tenor Paulo Paolillo, the baritone Douglas Hahn, and the bass Andrey Mira. The members of the Caruso Ensemble are Daniel Gonçalves – musical direction and piano; Renan Gonçalves – violin; Diego Mesquita – cello; and Daniel Oliveira – clarinet.
The programme consists of works by Gaetano Donizzetti, Giuseppe Verdi, Giacomo Puccini, and Pietro Mascagni.
