Italy’s Ambassador in Dar es Salaam, Marco Lombardi, met with Hussein Mwinyi, President of Zanzibar, yesterday, 22 February. During their meeting, Ambassador Lombardi presented a number of initiatives that aim to bring benefit to both Italy and Zanzibar.

Lombardi pointed out that Italy supported, in 2021, the creation of Hotel Association Zanzibar (HAZ) and that it is encouraging further economic cooperation, including through the organisation – alongside ITA (Italian Trade Agency) – of an Italy-Tanzania Business Forum to be held in Zanzibar and in Dar es Salaam next September. The Italian private sector has invested over two billion dollars in Zanzibar.

The Ambassador also highlighted the growing interest of Italian airlines in using Zanzibar’s renovated Karume airport, in order to offer new routes, thus ensuring more connections between our country and Tanzania. President Mwinyi, while expressing great satisfaction for Italy’s economic presence on the island, which creates many jobs, said he hopes Italy will opt for regular airline flights rather than seasonal flights and pointed out that his Administration has launched an initiative whose goal is to lease the smallest islands of the Zanzibar archipelago for tourism.
