The Italian Embassy in Washington celebrates the International Day of Girls and Women in Science with webinar: “A WOMAN’S EYE ON IMMUNOLOGY”

A significant gender gap persists around the world in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Despite some progress, women are still underrepresented in these fields.

Gender equality and women’s empowerment are crucial to contribute to global economic development and to achieve the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

For the International Day of Girls and Women in Science (February11), the Italian Embassy in Washington is organising the webinar “A Woman’s eye on immunology” on February 10 so as to raise awareness of these issues and the importance of working for equal access of women to science, thus promoting equal opportunities for study and career.

By highlighting the successes of female researchers in the field of immunology, in particular COVID-19 and infectious diseases, the webinar also aims to highlight Italian excellence in research and promote bilateral scientific cooperation between Italy and the United States.

The opening addresses will be delivered by the Italian Ambassador to the United States, Mariangela Zappia, the UN Women Representative in Ethiopia to the African Union and UNECA, Letty Chiwara, and the President of the “Top Italian Women Scientists”, Adriana Albini.

The opening addresses will be followed by presentations made by the scientists and academics, Delia Goletti, Alba Grifoni, Galit Alter and Professor Guido Silvestri, and finally by a panel, moderated by Prof. Alan Landay, on “Women in Science: Challenges and Opportunities”.
