“CIAO LINA!” is the film festival the Italian Embassy in Lisbon has organised to pay homage to film director Lina Wertmüller, offering a selection of her most iconic movies in outdoor cinema screenings for four evenings, attended by a high-profile audience, featuring representatives of the Portuguese Government and Parliament. The films were screened in the magnificent setting of the patio of the Conde de Pombeiro Palace, headquarters of the Residence of Italy. The palace is known for its precious heritage of decorative majolica (azulejos), which embellish the external areas.

The films (with Portuguese subtitles for the occasion) selected to pay homage to the great Italian film director, who passed away in 2021, are Mimì metallurgico ferito nell’onoreFilm d’amore e d’anarchiaI basilischi and Pasqualino Settebellezze. The festival will end on Thursday 15 September, but will be available online for the whole weekend. Indeed, in order to extend the initiative to the general public, the Embassy will offer – via streaming and free of charge – the film that opened the festival. It will be possible to watch Mimì metallurgico on the Vimeo platform from midnight of Friday 16 September until 11.59 pm of Sunday 18 September. “Spanning a century of Italian cinema and history, always paying attention to the social dimension of art and to the fights for the emancipation of women, with a very peculiar satirical and irreverent approach, Wertmüller has depicted memorable frescoes of a country that, through her films, has also learnt to look at itself from an ironic standpoint,” Ambassador Formosa said at the presentation of the festival.
