“To build an every-stronger Europe it is important to have a shared reading of history as a starting point. After the conference in April 2022 dedicated to De Gasperi and the June conference on Alto Adige-Sud Tirolo, this is the third event for shared reflection on Italy and Austria’s common history. An event extended this time to include France, as is only right when we’re speaking about the nineteenth century”. These were the remarks by the Ambassador of Italy to Vienna, Stefano Beltrame, opening the conference on “The Italian Risorgimento as European Journey. Europe and nations in the nineteenth century: Italy, Austria and France”. The conference took place on 10 October in the Embassy of Italy in Vienna.

Speaking at the conference was the Ambassador of France to Vienna, Gilles Pécout, an expert in Italian history and celebrated biographer of Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour. Other speakers included Andreas Gottsmann, Director of the Austrian History Institute in Rome and editor, with Luciano Monzali and Andrea Di Michele, of “La difficile riappacificazione Italia, Austria e Alto Adige nel XX secolo”. The conference was moderated by the Ambassador of Italy to the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Stefano Baldi.

The initiative marks the successful continuation of cultural activities analysing our historical relations with Austria, organised by our Embassy and Cultural Institute in Vienna with the aim of fostering a common European identity and a shared vision of events over the centuries.
