Yesterday the 16th edition of the Italian Film Festival was inaugurated in Lisbon. Every year in Portugal, the festival presents the best of Italian auteur cinema, under the auspices of the Italian Embassy.
More than a thousand people attended the festival’s opening ceremony at the prestigious Cinema São Jorge in Lisbon, in the hall named after Manoel de Oliveira. Director Emanuele Crialese attended the event, presenting to the Portuguese public the film L’Immensità, which was met with an enthusiastic response.
Italian Ambassador Carlo Formosa, who, together with festival director Stefano Savio, opened the event, wished to thank not only the authorities in attendance, but also the very large audience gathered for the festival. “Your enthusiasm for Italian culture is the energy that drives our work every day”, said Ambassador Formosa.
In addition to a selection of Italian film productions of the last year, the festival agenda includes the theatrical performance Le Voci di Dante, starring actor Toni Servillo. The play, promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Embassy and Cultural Institute of Lisbon, is a production of the Piccolo Teatro di Milano – Teatro d’Europa. The festival takes place from 29 March to 6 April in Lisbon before continuing its programming in ten other cities in Portugal.
