The Italian Cultural Institute of Sofia, together with the National Gallery and the “Phodar” Foundation, promotes the 12th International Photo Festival – “Phodar” Biennial, hosted at the Museum of Art from the Socialist Period. The festival is organised with the support of the Sofia Municipality Culture Programme, and the exhibition will be open to the public until 2 July 2023. The Biennial is among the world’s leading photography events, and this year’s edition almost saw a doubling in the number of participants as compared to previous editions.
This year’s event features the work of 21 photographers from 12 countries, with over 270 photographs selected from the festival network. The theme of the event, “Sameness and Semblance”, is intended to be a glance at the development and changes in the language of photography and to draw attention to new paths related to the humanities in contemporary photography. Among others, the exhibition includes the works of Alessio Paduano, who won the competition’s Grand Prize. The photographer presented a series of images of great emotional impact taken in Ukraine at the beginning of the war.
