The first Italian-led coordination meeting of the group of Ambassadors from the G7 countries and the EU Head of Delegation was held in Kiev. Organised at the Italian Embassy and chaired by Ambassador Pier Francesco Zazo, the meeting was attended by representatives from Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union.
At the opening, Ambassador Zazo presented his colleagues with the priorities of the Italian Presidency, in which Ukraine plays a central role. “Italy confirms the G7’s strong, shared support for Ukraine, which will be able to continue to count on us and on our commitment to a just and lasting peace, also with a view to the future reconstruction of the country”, said the Ambassador, emphasising that the olive tree – the symbol of the Presidency – is a universal sign of peace.
“In 2024, the G7 Support Group will renew its full support to the Ukrainian government and people in their domestic reform path, with particular reference to strengthening the rule of law, fighting corruption, judicial reform, decentralisation, promotion of democracy and transition to a green economy”, the Ambassador continued. “Very appreciable results have already been achieved, as demonstrated by the decision made by the European Council on the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. However, there is still a long way to go: along this path, Ukraine will not be alone but will have at its side the G7 Support Group, liberal democracies and the most advanced economies”.
The G7 Ambassadors’ Support Group in Kiev was established by decision of the Leaders at the 2015 Elmau Summit. Since its inception, the group has supported the domestic reform process in Ukraine, working with Ukrainian institutions, primarily the Government and Parliament, civil society, business and experts. For 2024, the Italian Embassy is responsible for coordinating and steering the Group’s work.
