On 4 June, the Embassy of Italy to the Holy See hosted the event “The challenges facing universities today: complexity, artificial intelligence and the diplomacy of cultures”, promoted by the Pontifical University of Saint Anthony in cooperation with the University of Campania, the Academy of Fine Arts of Macerata and the University of Bari. The event provided an opportunity to reflect on the transformations reshaping the academic world, with particular attention to the impact of artificial intelligence.

The responsible governance of AI is a priority issue for both Italy and the Holy See. Pope Francis highlighted the issue at the G7 Summit in Borgo Egnazia in 2024, while Pope Leo XIV devoted his first Encyclical, Magnifica Humanitas, to the protection of the human person in the digital age.

The event, held at Palazzo Borromeo, was opened by Ambassador Francesco Di Nitto and introduced by Professor Paolo Cancelli of the Pontifical University of Saint Anthony. Speakers included Professor Andrea Bizzozero, Professor Alessia Fachechi, Professor Daniela Leoni, Professor Sabrina Martucci and Professor Daniele Damele, who explored the cultural, ethical and educational implications of artificial intelligence.
