What are the votes for?
With the Decrees of the President of the Republic dated 31/03/2025, published in the Official Gazette, General Series, No. 75, of 31/03/2025, five abrogative popular referendums have been called for:
- Italian Citizenship: Reducing the required legal residence time in Italy for foreign non-EU adults applying for Italian citizenship from 10 years to 5 years.
- Contract of employment with increasing protections – regulation of unlawful dismissals: Abolition.
- Small businesses – dismissals and related compensation: Partial abolition.
- Partial abolition of rules regarding the imposition of term limits on employment contracts, maximum duration, and conditions for extensions and renewals.
- Exclusion of solidary responsibility of the client, contractor, and subcontractor for injuries suffered by employees of contracting or subcontracting companies, resulting from the specific risks of the activity of the contracting or subcontracting companies: Abolition.
Who can vote abroad?
- Voters registered with AIRE (Registry of Italians Resident Abroad) who receive the voting package directly at their residence address abroad.
- Italians temporarily abroad for at least three months, exclusively for WORK, STUDY, or MEDICAL TREATMENT, and their family members living with them abroad.
IMPORTANT: Voters temporarily abroad must submit a specific request to their municipality of residence in Italy BY 7 MAY to receive the voting package.
When is the vote?
- In Italy, voting will take place on Sunday 8 and Monday 9 June 2025.
Voters abroad will vote early by mail. Voting packages will be sent to the residence address by 21 MAY.
IMPORTANT: Voters who have NOT RECEIVED the voting package BY 25 MAY may contact their consular office to request a DUPLICATE.
How do you vote?
Voting is by mail. The voting ballots must be returned to the consulate, following the instructions on the information sheet included in the voting package, and using only the materials provided. Only the completed ballots received by the relevant consular office BY 4:00 p.m. local time on Thursday 5 JUNE will be sent to Italy for counting.
