Italy’s Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Giorgio Silli, visited London from 8 to 9 February to hold institutional meetings at the Home Office with the UK Under Secretary of State for Legal Migration and the Border, Tom Pursglove, and at the Foreign Office with the UK Under Secretary of State for the Americas and the Caribbean, David Rutley.
The visit was an opportunity for Italy to strengthen the excellent relationship with the United Kingdom and to further political exchanges with a major partner on issues of common interest. A year after his first mission to London on the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS), Undersecretary Silli and Pursglove once again discussed developments and remaining issues on the scheme at the Home Office; the matter is of particular interest to the Italian community resident in the United Kingdom, which, with over 500,000 registered compatriots, is the third largest European community to benefit from the EUSS scheme.
At the Foreign Office, Silli and Rutley exchanged views on the political situation in Latin America, and in particular in Central America and the Caribbean, also discussing the most recent developments in countries such as Nicaragua, Guyana, Cuba and Guatemala. In this regard, the two Under Secretaries agreed on the importance of continuing to pay close attention to the area, which is of strategic importance for both Italy and the United Kingdom.
The visit was also an opportunity for the United Kingdom to express interest in the Mattei Plan for Africa.
