The Italian Cultural Institute of Dakar presents “Daniele Tamagni – Style Is Life”, a retrospective exhibition on the Italian photographer, shown for the first time in Senegal following its success at Palazzo Morando in Milan in 2024, and coinciding with the opening at the Galleria Civica / MART in Trento. Organised by the Daniele Tamagni Foundation, “Daniele Tamagni – Style Is Life” has arrived in Dakar in a site-specific version, curated by Aïda Muluneh (who conceived the original project together with Chiara Bardelli Nonino), in collaboration with the prestigious Musée Théodore Monod d’Art africain – IFAN.
The exhibition is part of a programme promoting Italian photography abroad, supported by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The exhibition journey begins at the Musée Théodore Monod d’Art africain, offering an overview of Tamagni’s photography through 80 images of his most significant works, juxtaposed with the museum’s historic collections of fabrics and garments, specially arranged for the occasion on the first floor, under the curatorship of El Hadji Malick Ndiaye.
The exhibition showcases collections dedicated to the sapeurs of the SAPE (Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) from Brazzaville, the Dakar Fashion Week in Senegal, musicians from Botswana, urban crews from Johannesburg, and the cholitas of Bolivia. The exhibition continues at the Italian Cultural Institute, featuring two sections: the first is dedicated to Daniele Tamagni’s figure, retracing his career, achievements, and influence on fashion and contemporary photography. The second section presents the works of four winners of the “Daniele Tamagni Grant” – Khirelsid Ahmed (Sudan), Meseret Argaw (Ethiopia), Fatma Fahmy (Egypt), and Fawaz Oyedeji (Nigeria) – established by the Daniele Tamagni Foundation with the aim of enhancing his artistic legacy and bearing witness to his profound connection with Africa.
The exhibition’s photographs are published in the monograph “Daniele Tamagni – Style Is Life”.
