The training and social-educational rehabilitation project for disadvantaged young people from Panciu, in Romania’s Vrancea region, will come to an end on 31 May 2012. The project was financed by Italian Development Cooperation and implemented by COMI, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with local partner organisation ROM PENTRU ROM.
350,000 euros for training initiatives and a rehabilitation centre
The goal of the project was to foster the social rehabilitation and social-educational inclusion of young people from disadvantaged groups in the municipality of Panciu, a town of 8000 inhabitants in the south-east of Vrancea region. About 8% of its population is of Rom ethnicity. The town also has a number of youngsters with disabilities; orphans, some of whom institutionalised; and children whose parents have emigrated – making a total of around 200 disadvantaged young people. The funding provided by the Directorate General for Development Cooperation (345,240 euros) was used to complete the renovation work on the “Pinocchio Centre” and train local operators in the tasks involved in maintaining the structure and seeking funding through sponsorship and other new project submissions.
