Vice Minister Marina Sereni participated in a videoconference at the ministerial meeting of the Alliance for Multilateralism, held on the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
The speeches focused on the need to “rebuild the world and multilateral institutions in the best possible way” after the COVID-19 crisis, especially considering climate, health, digital technology, and gender equality.
In her speech, the Vice Minister noted how the current pandemic had generated a widespread sense of uncertainty. “The most effective and structural response to the challenges we face – explained Sereni – lies in a reformed and strengthened multilateralism. Suppose we can count on an international system based on precise rules, universal values, fundamental rights, and equality and inclusion. In that case, we will be able to outline a lasting solution to the current crisis. The agenda Italy is defining for the G20 Presidency we are preparing to assume is based on three essential concepts, People, Planet and Prosperity”.
“For 2021, as co-president of COP26 in collaboration with the United Kingdom – continued the Vice Minister – we have in store an ambitious and multifaceted program. We want to put the planed safety at the centre of the Conference agenda. The task before us is as difficult as it is crucial to mark our future. It is up to us to emerge from this emergency in the best possible way. We cannot return to the old normality. We have to work together for a new, more inclusive, green and sustainable normality in which to live,” concluded Sereni.
