The Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Maria Tripodi, met with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly and the High-Level Week, which will take place from 22 September to 2 October.

The discussion focused on Italy’s main priorities and the United Nations’ international agenda. Italy will take part in the UN General Assembly, focusing its efforts on the main crisis scenario – Ukraine, the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz – and on strategic issues such as food security, access to fertilisers and freedom of navigation. Particular attention will also be paid to Africa and the issue of critical minerals, as well as to the reform of the United Nations (UN80).

Tripodi and Mohammed went on to discuss in greater detail the issues surrounding next year’s UN Food Systems Summit, a topic on which Italy plays a leading role. Against this backdrop, Italy regards food security and the transformation of agri-food systems as a strategic priority for development cooperation.
