Conclusion of international conference at the Farnesina on UN Security Council reform

The international conference “Pathways for a more inclusive and accountable Security Council” on the reform of the UN Security Council, hosted by Italy in its capacity of “focal point” of the Uniting for Consensus group, concluded today.

The event was divided into two sessions that offered an opportunity for open and constructive dialogue on all the main issues which are being discussed within the Inter-Governmental Negotiations under way on the United Nations Security Council reform (veto, working methods, relations between the Council and the General Assembly, categories of membership – permanent and non-permanent seats – regional representation and the size of the future Council), in the view  of increasing its representativeness, transparency, efficiency and accountability.

The meeting, which lasted two days, offered a useful opportunity for an evaluation of the various hypotheses and visions emerging from negotiations, in the view of identifying points of convergences and a further analysis of those aspects that remain controversial, with the objective of fostering the broadest possible consensus among UN Member States. The level of the meeting’s attendance was excellentt, reflecting the importance that UN Member States attach to the issue of the reform.
