Today the Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Benedetto Della Vedova, attended the 60th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) dedicated to “Atoms for Peace and Development”.
Senator Della Vedova expressed Italy’s full support for the Agency’s activity aimed at enhancing the capacity of all Countries to put nuclear technology to a safe and peaceful use, also with a view to achieving the goals of Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development. Among Italy’s points of excellent in this sector mention was made of the National Centre for Oncological Hadron Therapy in Pavia and the laboratories of the National Institute of Nuclear Physics in Catania.
While underscoring Italy’s commitment towards promoting universal adhesion to disarmament and non-proliferation treaties on weapons of mass destruction, Senator Della Vedova condemned the two nuclear tests conducted this year by North Korea, as they constitute “a threat to international peace and security”.
On the sidelines of the Conference, Undersecretary Della Vedova met with the Director General of IAEA, Yukiya Amano, to examine some of the most topical issues in the field of nuclear technology.
