The Italian Ambassador to Senegal, Giovanni Umberto De Vito, visited the Italian Navy’s frigate “Antonio Marceglia”, which made a stopover in Dakar on its return from a campaign of operations conducted in the Gulf of Guinea. In Dakar, the frigate Marceglia conducted an exercise with the Senegalese Navy before continuing its navigation.
In greeting the crew, Ambassador De Vito expressed his appreciation for the Navy’s commitment in the Gulf of Guinea, a qualifying component of Italy’s action in favour of security and stability in West Africa. “Alongside the strengthening of the diplomatic network in the region, with the opening of new diplomatic offices in Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso and most recently in Mali,” said the Ambassador, “Italy is making a significant contribution to the efforts of the international community in terms of security and defence, through operations at sea such as ‘Gabinia’ and participation in the main international missions within the framework of the United Nations and the European Union”.
Operation Gabinia, which began in February 2020 and under which the frigate Marceglia operates, provides for the deployment of an air-sea device for presence, surveillance and security activities in the Gulf of Guinea, an area of interest to ensure freedom of navigation and merchant links with the Mediterranean Sea.
