The exhibition “Gladiators: heroes of the Colosseum” was inaugurated recently at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante; the inauguration was attended by Italy’s Ambassador to Spain, Mr Riccardo Guariglia.

“This exhibition – Ambassador Guariglia said – is by all means a new, important step in further strengthening bilateral relations between Italy and Spain, giving due value to the past that we have in common and that unites us, in particular the myth of Rome, which is undoubtedly to be seen in gladiators, indeed one of the most renowned figures linked to such myth. The Embassy is pleased to support this initiative, knowing it will be greatly appreciated by the Spanish and international public, following the huge success of the exhibition on the Etruscans, hosted last year by this very Museum in Alicante”.

The exhibition, sponsored by the Italian Embassy in Madrid, will be open to the general public until 16 October 2022; it reconstructs the daily lives of gladiators and showcases more than 140 original artefacts belonging to eight of Italy’s foremost museums, including the Archaeological Museum of Naples and the Archaeological Park of the Colosseum in Rome. Some of the most significant artefacts on display include the four helmets found at the Gladiators’ Barracks in Pompeii.
