With the start of the 2026–2027 academic year in the newly refurbished premises of the historic ‘Casa d’Italia’ building, a new chapter is beginning in the history of the Italian community in Zurich.
The resumption of school activities marks an initial and crucial milestone, which will be followed, in the coming months, by the restoration of the entire complex to full functionality. This autumn will also see the opening of the part of the building intended to house the Consulate General, the Italian Cultural Institute, the ITA’s Desk Attrazione Investimenti and the Comites.
The project therefore goes beyond the simple refurbishment of a building. The revitalisation of the Casa d’Italia represents a strategic investment by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation aimed at enhancing a prestigious state-owned property covering almost 3,000 square metres, restoring its role as a major Italian institutional, cultural and educational hub in Switzerland.
“Today is a day we have been looking forward to for a long time,” said Mario Baldi, the Italian Consul General in Zurich. “The start of the school year in the newly refurbished Casa d’Italia is a significant achievement, albeit still only a partial one, as it represents the first step towards the complete revival of the Casa d’Italia. Today we are returning this building to Italian schools and our pupils; over the coming months we will complete the relocation of the other Italian institutions that will be based here.”
The start of the school year therefore also has symbolic significance. The first to return to the Casa d’Italia are young people – pupils from Italian schools – who are being given back a modern and functional space, set within a building steeped in history and deeply linked to the Italian presence in Switzerland.
