“The launch of deliberations by the Supreme Court of New Delhi is an important stage in the case of our servicemen Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone, since it concerns the fundamental aspect of the case, i.e. the ascertainment of jurisdiction in the judgement of our men”, underscored Minister for Foreign Affairs Giulio Terzi.
“The Italian government”, Terzi explained, “is monitoring the question closely, and will continue to follow each of the phases of the Supreme Court procedures, not least through the Italian experts assisting the men’s legal defence team. Our position is consistent with the principle that we have not failed to repeat over these past months in meetings with our partners and in all the most important international forums: Italy has exclusive jurisdiction owing to the fact that the events took place in international waters on a ship waving the Italian flag on which Italian servicemen were engaged on behalf of the State and therefore immune to the jurisdiction of other States”.
