The Ambassador of Italy to the USA, Mariangela Zappia, inaugurated at Villa Firenze in Washington the Week of Women and Girls in Science, an initiative promoted by the Italian Embassy together with the Embassies of France and Germany, the Children’s National Research Institute and the George Washington University.

The event, built around the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is celebrated on 11 February, aims to raise awareness on the issue and promote fairer access for women in science, aiming to foster equal opportunities for study and careers. On the occasion, the “Women in Science Diplomacy Club” was also launched to promote the gender perspective in science diplomacy.

“It is well known that women are underrepresented in STEM disciplines and that this results in a loss of talents, perspectives and ideas, thus slowing down development. Having more women in science adds precious value to research projects in all fields”, Ambassador Zappia pointed out.

The programme for the week includes an exhibition at Georgetown University, a screening of the film Hidden Figures at the Children’s National Research Institute, and events organised by the French and German Embassies.
