Competence and Tasks The Directorate General for Cyber Issues, Information Technology, and Technology Innovation is responsible for the following tasks:
a) ensures the handling of issues related to international policies on cybersecurity and the use of cyber resources, including to combat disinformation activities, within the Ministry’s remit;
b) ensures the handling of issues within the Ministry’s remit relating to artificial intelligence;
c) ensures cybersecurity;
d) ensures the management and development of the Foreign Ministry’s information technologies;
e) promotes the digitalization of the administration and ensures the management of related infrastructure;
f) ensures the implementation and development of activities in the fields of encryption and communications;
g) promotes technology innovation in the activities of the central administration and its offices abroad.

Competence and Tasks Design, implementation, management, and support of the Administration’s IT applications related to consular functions, voting rights abroad, the Schengen visa system, staff management, the entry control system and the MAENET system, competitions, international applications, scholarships, military equipment, the agri-food sector, archaeological missions, business services, accounting management of the Foreign Ministry, and payroll management for all staff; design, implementation, and management of software and middleware platforms, including the Administration’s data structures and related logical flows; document management and messaging for the Administration; supervision and technical advice regarding applications managed by other Centres of Responsibility; digitization of the consular archives of the international network; in coordination with Office III of the Directorate General, application security, platforms, middleware, and related services; relations with institutional entities in the areas of responsibility; management of European funds related to the Schengen system; procurement of goods and services in the areas of responsibility.

Competence and Tasks Cybersecurity for the Central Administration and offices abroad: regulatory compliance, threat intelligence, risk analysis and management, security policies, ICT incident monitoring and response, security validation of ICT systems, applications, and services, vulnerability assessment and management, penetration testing; audits, inspection support, and cybersecurity training; Data Protection Officer (DPO); relations with institutional entities within the scope of responsibility; procurement of goods and services within the areas of competence. The Head of the Office serves as the Administration’s Chief Information Security Officer.

Competence and Tasks Design, implementation, management, and support of the unclassified ICT infrastructure of the Central Administration and the centrally managed ICT infrastructure of the offices abroad: server and client systems, both fixed and mobile, including related operating systems and basic software; networking, including the Internet connectivity, SPC, and SRIPA; ICT infrastructure services, including authentication and digital signature systems for internal users, data sharing systems, ordinary and certified email, and other ICT communication systems; fixed and mobile telephone services; maintenance and development of the telephone exchange and technical opinions on the telephone system of the offices abroad; telephone switchboard; issuance of policies, standards, and technical opinions regarding the unclassified ICT infrastructure of the offices abroad; in coordination with Office III of the Directorate General, security of systems and services under its jurisdiction; relations with institutional entities in the areas of competence; purchase of goods and services within the areas of jurisdiction; official in charge of the administration and conservation of IT and telephone assets of the Central Administration. The Head of the Office serves as Chief Technology Officer of the Administration.

Competence and Tasks Directing and coordinating the Ministry’s activities in countering hybrid threats, disinformation, and improving State and societal resilience; addressing bilateral and multilateral issues in the field of hybrid threats and countering disinformation, including the G7 Rapid Response Mechanism; coordinating Italian positions in the work of the Council’s Hybrid Group, participating in the Hybrid Fusion Cell and meetings of the EU Hybrid Special Envoys; participating in the European Centre of Excellence for Countering Hybrid Threats in Helsinki; cooperating with key international organizations (EU, NATO) and like-minded groups in the fields of monitoring and countering hybrid threats and disinformation; coordinating with relevant government agencies; analysis and monitoring of developments and trends in the country’s international perception, in coordination with the Communications Unit of the Secretariat General.
