| Competence and tasks | The Directorate-General for Europe and International Trade Policy performs is responsible for the following tasks: a) it carries out European integration activities in relation to the requests and negotiating processes regarding the treaties on the European Union, the Functioning of the European Union, and EURATOM; b) it collaborates with other competent government departments in defining Italian positions and ensures their representation and consistency within the European Union’s institutions and bodies; maintains relations with the European Commission and other European Union’s institutions, including the European External Action Service, in coordination with the Directorate-General for Political Affairs and International Security; c) it handles negotiations on issues relating to the European integration process; d) it handles negotiations on issues relating to international trade policy; e) it collaborates with the National School of Administration in the public officials’ training on EU matters. f) it promotes, in agreement with the other competent Directorates-General, bilateral relations of a political, economic, cultural, and any other nature, conducts related negotiations, and is responsible for the analysis, definition, and implementation of diplomatic action with European Union’s Member States and candidate countries, European Economic Area countries, and the Balkan countries, without prejudice to the responsibilities of the Directorate-General for Political Affairs and International Security and any amendments that may be tabled with respect to individual countries or groups of countries identified by Ministerial Decree; g) it ensures Italy’s participation in the activities of other regional cooperation and international organizations. |
