G7 Apulia Progress Report 2024: Advancing Sustainable Development in Africa – A Key Milestone in G7-Africa Cooperation
29 November 2024
On November 29, the G7 Accountability Working Group (AWG) has officially presented the “G7 Apulia Progress Report 2024: Advancing Sustainable Development in Africa”. This thematic report, focused on Africa, provides an in-depth assessment of the progress made from 2015 to 2022 on existing G7 development commitments related to the continent. It aims to inform future G7 cooperation strategies and foster stronger, more effective partnerships with African countries.
Under the Italian G7 Presidency, Africa has been placed at the center of the G7’s development agenda, underscoring the continent’s potential for sustainable growth and its vital role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the African Union’s Agenda 2063, and the Paris Agreement. This report follows 16 years of AWG efforts to scrutinize the performance of G7 members’ governmental activities, providing an evidence-based look at the alignment of development efforts with their long-standing commitments to Africa.
The G7 Apulia Progress Report 2024 evaluates nine key G7 commitments across multiple sectors including trade, infrastructure, digital transformation, food security, education, climate resilience, women’s empowerment, maritime security, and migration. This year’s report is notable for its incorporation of a gender equality lens, marking a significant step in G7 efforts to support gender-transformative development through Official Development Assistance (ODA).
The report was presented during a high-level webinar that brought together G7 members, the Commission of the African Union (AU), and the African Union Development Agency-NEPAD (AUDA-NEPAD), offering a platform for the dialogue and the discussions on lessons learned, best practices, and strategies for renewing and consolidate the G7-Africa partnership. The webinar emphasized the importance of building effective, equitable partnerships to advance the goals of Agenda 2063 and the SDGs.
The G7 continues to demonstrate its commitment to Africa’s security, stability, and sustainable development, reaffirming its long-standing dedication to the continent as a key partner in global progress.
