Ecuador – debt conversion to save the environment

Minister Terzi discussed a debt conversion agreement while meeting at the foreign ministry in Rome with Vice-President of the National Assembly of Ecuador Juan Carlos Cassinelli, here for a series of parliamentary meetings and encounters with the Ecuadoran community.

The debt conversion agreement will allow the government of Ecuador to use the resulting resources to implement a broad-based environmental protection programme, proposed by Ecuador to the UN, in that country’s largest natural park.

This will make Italy the world’s top contributor to a project aimed at saving Ecuador’s natural patrimony from the consequences of oil drilling in that area, which Ecuador will be able to forgo thanks precisely to the additional funds to be made available by the international community.
