Gaza: basis for truce in coming hours, but Israel must be certain that rockets will stop, says Terzi

“The basis exists for a truce in the coming hours”, but Israel can “restrain itself only if it has the absolute certainty that rocket launches will not be repeated”, asserted Minister Giulio Terzi.

“Israel is aware, and in my conversations with the members of the Israeli government I was not given the impression of any desire to go into Gaza, exactly the contrary, but this restraint of force by Israel must be founded on the absolute certainty that rocket launches will not be repeated”, Terzi explained. According to the minister, in today’s EU Council meeting “it is necessary to foreground the role of countries directly involved, such as Egypt and Turkey, first and foremost as mediators of a truce that must be sustainable, therefore also with a guarantee from outside of Gaza and not only the word of a terrorist organisation that is behind the escalation of the violence”.
