TOURISM – agreement between gnudi and the unwto

Meeting the needs of people with disabilities and ensuring that tourism sites and structures are accessible, as a key element in promoting tourism. This was the topic discussed at the international conference on “Accessibility in Tourism: an ethical value, a business opportunity”, which took place in Milan during the 33rd edition of the BIT, the International Tourism Exchange.

The event also saw a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), and Piero Gnudi, the Italian Minister for Regional Affairs, Tourism and Sport. The MOU concerns the Permanent Secretariat of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, which was established in Rome in 2008.

As Rifai underscored, “accessibility in tourism is a right and an ethical obligation, but it is also an important business opportunity”. A conviction shared by Gnudi, who pointed out the Italian Government’s commitment in implementing “numerous initiatives that have acted as strong drivers for accessibility, with the involvement of all stakeholders”.
