Italian exhibitions have been attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors: the Raphael exhibition at Tokyo’s National Museum of Western Art, which remains open through 2 June has already drawn 300,000 visitors. Large crowds also for the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum’s showing of Leonardo masterpieces from Milan’s Ambrosiana Library, which has welcomed 55,000 visitors since its opening on 22 April, with peaks of over 7,000 a day during the Golden Week festivities that many Japanese dedicate to cultural activities.

The exhibition “Rubens: Inspiration in Italy, success in Antwerp” is still under way in the city of Kitakyushu, a major industrial centre on the island of Kyushu, after previously being hosted at the Bunkamura Museum in Tokyo. The exhibit on photographer Mario Giacomelli at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography has also enjoyed great success. All the events are part of the “Italy in Japan 2013” series coordinated by the Embassy of Italy in that country.
