Syria: the EU calls for an immediate investigation on chemical weapons reports

The European Union’s foreign ministers have called for an immediate and thorough investigation of the use of chemical weapons in Syria which, if confirmed, would be totally unacceptable.

“I have seen with grave concern the reports of the possible use of chemical weapons by the Syrian regime. Such accusations should be immediately and thoroughly investigated”, reads a statement from the EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton.

From Brussels, Foreign Minister Emma Bonino underscored that “we need to exert the utmost pressure to ensure that the inspectors on the ground are authorised to carry out an impartial and neutral assessment, and then we’ll see”. She added that the reports mean that “we must be on high alert but you can’t base political action on speculation”. No action should be taken, therefore, until the results of the investigation are available.
