Marines: Bonino at Davos, Indian ministers commitment to 3 February

Minister Emma Bonino, in Davos for the World Economic Forum, after meeting with Indian Ministers for Finance and Trade, reported that they had assured her of their commitment to securing their government’s decision on the marines on 3 February, as requested by the Supreme Court. Bonino also reported that the question of the marines had been confronted by EU officials today in Delhi.

According to the minister, the two Indian ministers then expressed their “clear” conviction that the “death penalty is not conceivable”. The objective now is to go to trial as soon as possible, which Italy “will follow carefully”. In any case, the minister pointed out, “as soon as the trial is over they will return to Italy”, as envisioned in international “accords”.
