Middle East – Mogherini says humanitarian truce urgent in coming hours

“We insist at least on a humanitarian ceasefire in the coming hours”, said Minister Federica Mogherini during a press conference at the foreign ministry that followed a meeting with New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “There is a proposal on the table that calls for an immediate ceasefire and the launch of negotiations, with elements of rapid humanitarian crisis response, and the community must push in this direction”, she added.

Intolerable casualty toll

“The images of Gaza are intolerable: the number of dead and wounded, including children, but also the indiscriminate rocket launches against Israel, which must cease”, Minister Mogherini declared in the margins of the meeting, expressing the hope that “in the coming hours there will be a response to Arab, American, European and UN pressure and the appeals of the Pope”.
