The Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, is in Paris today, 20 February 2015, for the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union’s Mediterranean countries, known as the “Med Group”. Taking part in the meeting, chaired by the French Foreign Minister, Fabius, are the foreign ministers of Spain, Greece, Portugal, Cyprus and Malta, as well as the High Representative, Mogherini.
Crisis regions
Key points on the agenda are the principal crises in the regions to the south and east: Syria and Iraq, Libya and Ukraine. Other topics for discussion include the coordination of the Group’s member countries to establish a common “Mediterranean” approach in the run-up to forthcoming European commitments. These include the review of the European neighbourhood policy, especially as regards the common objective of making better use of financial credits, and the preparation of the Eastern Partnership summit in Riga in May.
Cooperation in the Mediterranean
A discussion on “Cooperation in the Mediterranean” with the Anna Lindh Foundation and the Union for the Mediterranean is also envisaged. Topics will include intercultural dialogue and the promotion of tolerance; cooperation for the benefit of young people; and climate change.
