Gentiloni at meeting on Syria

“I embraced my colleague Laurent Fabius here in Vienna in the name of Italian solidarity and shock”, stated Minister Gentiloni from the Austrian capital, where the International Syria Support Group met yesterday. “We are so close to France, so close to the French, that this tragedy strikes us as well”, he added.

The group’s recent formation has given positive impetus to a diplomatic dialogue aimed at facilitating a political settlement to the conflict. “The aim is to find a link between the start of a political transition that leads to Bashar Al Assad’s stepping down and ceasefire”. Gentiloni said.

“The international community are united in the struggle against Daesh and convinced that the effort must be a common and coordinated one and needs strengthening”, the minister commented upon his re-entry from Vienna.
