Studi e Ricerche per il Mezzogiorno, a research centre linked to the Intesa Sanpaolo group, has presented its study entitled “Outlook – Italian business in the United Arab Emirates”.
This is the first systematic study of Italian business in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Italian-Emirates economic and industrial partnership. The study is the end result of complex statistical analyses and in-depth research in the field, conducted by a team from Studi e Ricerche per il Mezzogiorno.
The study is a working tool to attempt to grasp the significant opportunities that will continue to arise for Italian businesses in the coming years. This is especially true in the light of the UAE government’s interest in speeding up the diversification of the economy, especially as regards small and medium-sized enterprises and technological innovation. The impact of the expansion of the Suez Canal through the global marine transport hub of Dubai and, more generally, the ports system in the Emirates as a whole, is also an important factor.
As the study shows, the UAE, in 5th place globally in terms of international openness to trade and with trade-GDP at 163%, already provide a sound platform for re-exporting. 46.3% of total imports are re-exported, a figure that rises to 70% if only the free trade zones are considered.
