A day dedicated to Tunisia and its new Constitution, as well as to the ‘opportunities’ for cooperation with Italy that this has opened up, especially at institutional and constitutional levels. The event takes place tomorrow, hosted by the Italian Cultural Institute in Tunis. It features the launch of the new book “Tunisia. La primavera della Costituzione” (Tunisia – Spring of the Constitution), edited by Tania Groppi and Irene Spigno, and the seminar “The new Tunisian Constitution: a bridge across the Mediterranean. Experiences of cooperation between Italy and Tunisia”. The volume offers a comprehensive overview of the document and is the product of a field study that saw the editors and many of the authors actively involved in developing the new constitution.

Participants on the day will include: Massimo Toschi, adviser on international cooperation and peace to the President of the Tuscany Regional Government; Giovanni Rizzoni, head of international relations at the Italian Chamber of Deputies, which is working on a joint programme with the Tunisian parliament; Melina Decaro, who co-directs a European masters course at LUISS for Mediterranean students; and Andrea Simoncini of Florence University, who is setting up an Italo-Tunisian study group on the management of metropolitan areas.
Of particular significance is the presence of the Mayor of Tunis, Seifallah Lasram, and of Fadhel Moussa from Carthage University, a member of the Tunisian Constituent Assembly. They have presented a declaration of support for the process of decentralisation in Tunisia, which was approved on 5 November in Florence during the World Conference of Mayors for Peace, “Unity in Diversity”. The Mayor of Florence, Dario Nardella, will be in Tunis on Wednesday to sign a cooperation agreement between the two cities.
