The “Sounds of Italy” series of concerts hosted by the Jazz Bistro in Toronto closed with a recital by pianist Giovanni Guidi. The project is the fruit of a partnership between the Italian Institute of Culture, the Consulate General of Italy in Toronto and Jazz.Fm91 radio station, Canada’s main jazz broadcaster with approximately 500,000 listeners a day. All performances were recorded and later broadcast to enable the Canadian public to learn about and appreciate the varied panorama of jazz.
Four concerts
Four events were scheduled in 2015-16, with Claudio Filippini inaugurating a very successful series of concerts on Oct. 13, Mirko Signorile playing on Nov. 10, Rita Marcotulli on Feb. 22, and with Giovanni Guidi ending the cycle. The last event was sold out, as were the other recitals. The management of the radio station expressed its appreciation of the success obtained by the concerts and requested a further series of concerts for 2016-17. Meanwhile, in order to establish closer relations with the Italian jazz scene, Jazz.Fm91 is organising a musical tour to Perugia in July to enable a large group of Canadian enthusiasts to attend the Umbria Jazz festival.
