Tunis – A shelter for heroes: the first Garden of the Righteous in an Arab country

For the first time an Arab country will plant its Garden of the Righteous: Tunisia will host it inside the grounds of the Italian Embassy in Tunis. The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Paolo Gentiloni, in a message broadcast during the planting ceremony of six new trees in the Garden of the Righteous in Milan to celebrate the International Women’s Day. “We thought of Tunisia because it is a particularly symbolic place and a crucial Country at the heart of the Mediterranean,” said Minister Gentiloni. On the same day, also the Italian Ambassador in Tunis, Raimondo De Cardona, announced the initiative and met with Abdessatar Ben Moussa, the President of the Tunisian Human Rights League and winner of Nobel Peace Prize in 2015, who will cooperate with the Italian Embassy in singling out the noteworthy people to be celebrated in the Garden. A tree will be dedicated to each one of the people selected.
