The “Toys for Tots” initiative launched by the Italian Embassy in Khartoum closed on April 10 after having distributed over 700 toys in Khartoum’s boys’ and girls’ orphanages and women’s penitentiary. The initiative was organised in partnership with International Voluntary Welfare Group-IVWG, a Sudanese volunteer association which has been active in helping the neediest segments of population since 1965. The event kicked off with a charity dinner at Casa d’Italia, the residence of Italian Ambassador Fabrizio Lobasso, at which the more than 300 guests were asked to bring a toy to give to poor Sudanese children. When delivering the first toys at the Dat Altaebat Penitentiary, in the suburbs of Omdurman, just outside Khartoum, Ambassador Lobasso said: “It gives me endless joy to give a child a smile. It is a universal message of inclusion which the diplomatic service has promoted in Sudan and in the world at large.”
