Berlin – Colours of Murano, Germany pays homage to the glass-blowing island

Sand and fire, hues and magic are the main features of the exhibition paying homage to Murano the Venetian island famous for its glass-blowing tradition: “Colours of Murano”, is hosted at the Bröhan Museum, in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district, from 14 July to 23 October. On show will be 220 glass objects, including several objects produced by the Toso brothers, whose “Antica Vetreria Fratelli Toso” is one of Murano’s historic traditional artistic glass-blowing factories. It was founded by the Toso family in 1854 and has always distinguished itself for being one of the best in the production of ‘murrine’, coloured patterns or images made in a glass cane. The exhibition will offer visitors the possibility of learning about the glass-blowing history of Murano which began in 1295, after the Venice government issued a decree to transfer the city’s glass-blowing factories to the island for security reasons because the glass furnaces were often responsible for extending disastrous fires to Venetian buildings, which were mainly built in wood. It will also give insight into a tradition that is at the same time ancient and thriving, as it continues to engage entire generations of islanders.
