The Farnesina expresses its deep satisfaction for the appointment, approved today in Brussels, of Giancarlo Marcheggiano to Secretary-General of the European Schools. It is the first time that an Italian is appointed to this post. It represents an important acknowledgement of the action Italy has carried out at the national and international level in the field of education and it has come about at a time of great expansion of the European Schools.
First established in the 50s, the European Schools system has grown over time and today it has 14 schools in seven countries (Belgium, France, Italy, Germany, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Spain). The system is regulated by the 1994 International Convention defining the Statues of the European Schools.
