Bosnia – Cooling centre for agriculture opens in Derventa

A cooling centre for agricultural products has been set up in Derventa (Northern Bosnia), implemented within the framework of a project to support areas affected by floods. It is being funded by the Italian Cooperation. The works include the external insulation of the building, which is equipped with panels and materials for the cooling cells to store fruit and vegetables. The initiative follows the opening of a canal for the protection of the suburban industrial area, with the aim of rebuilding as well as preventing any future disaster.  Derventa is one of the seven municipalities, together with Orasje, Maglaj, Srebrenica, Sanski Most, Zvornik and Zavidovici, where the Italian Cooperation is implementing a 1-million euro post-flood reconstruction project to provide support to farmers, breeders, and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “Farmers in Derventa now have a storage area for the preservation of fruit and vegetables.

The cooling centre, set up by the Italian Cooperation together with the local municipalities, will improve the farmers’ position on markets, thus contributing to the economic recovery of an area severely affected by the floods two years ago,” said Ruggero  Corrias, the Italian Ambassador in Sarajevo, during the opening ceremony of the centre.
