Minister Gentiloni is in New York City to participate in the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The 2016 theme is: “The Sustainable Development Goals: a Universal Push to Transform our World”. Great attention will be paid to the issue of migrations which has taken centrestage during the “Addressing vulnerabilities of refugees and migrants” summit, organised by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, accompanied by Foreign Affairs Minister Gentiloni and Interior Minister Angelino Alfano leads the Italian delegation.
Several events regarding key international issues will take place during the UNGA 71st session, such as the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum (GCTF), the Ministerial Meeting on Libya ( co-chaired by Minister Gentiloni and US Secretary of State Kerry) and regional initiatives concerning Palestine, Somalia, Iraq, Syria, South Sudan and Tunisia.
During the UNGA week Italy will organize “side-events” targeting the universal moratorium on the death penalty, regional solutions to global problems generated by migrant and refugee flows, the fight against the destruction and illegal trafficking of countries’ archeological and cultural assets, activites conducted by the Uniting for Consensus Group on the reform of the U.N. Security Council.
